PlayFab pricing 2026: free tier, meters, alternatives
By Mike Dalton ·
Azure PlayFab is Microsoft's game backend: player accounts, saves, economy, leaderboards, matchmaking, multiplayer servers, LiveOps, and analytics. It has a free mode for development, three paid plans, and a metered price for almost every service. This guide covers what each plan costs, how the meters work, what the analytics include, what changed in 2026, and the alternatives for the parts of PlayFab you might not need.
Facts and prices were checked against Microsoft's PlayFab pricing page and documentation in October 2026.
What is PlayFab?
PlayFab is a backend as a service for games, owned by Microsoft since 2018. Instead of running your own servers for accounts and game data, your game calls PlayFab's APIs. Its services are grouped into:
- Identity: player accounts and sign-in across platforms.
- Progression and community: player profiles, statistics, leaderboards, game saves, friends, and groups.
- Economy: catalogs, virtual currency, inventory, and stores.
- Multiplayer: matchmaking, lobbies, Party voice and chat, and dedicated multiplayer servers.
- LiveOps: title data, CloudScript with Azure Functions, segments, and experiments.
- Analytics: PlayStream and telemetry events, built-in reports, Data Explorer, and Data Connections.
It has SDKs for Unity, Unreal, C and C++, C#, Java, and JavaScript, plus a REST API. The C and C++ SDK covers Xbox, and PlayStation and Switch support is available on approval. There is no Godot SDK.
How much does PlayFab cost?
| Plan | Monthly price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Development Mode | $0 | Up to 10 titles, each limited to 1,000 lifetime players and fixed usage caps |
| Pay-as-you-go | $0 base | No included usage: every meter is billed from the first unit |
| Standard | $99/mo | Included usage on each meter, lower rates after that, and support tickets |
| Premium | $1,999/mo | Much larger included usage, the lowest rates, and emergency escalation |
Plan changes take effect on the first day of the next month, and usage is invoiced monthly.
Development Mode
Every new title starts in Development Mode. It costs nothing, and its usage does not count toward your bill, but each title stops accepting new players at 1,000 lifetime players, which counts every account ever created, not monthly active players. Each title also has caps such as 1 million PlayStream events, 1 million telemetry events, and 1 million profile writes. To go past them, you launch the title in Game Manager and pick a paid plan.
Foundation Mode
In March 2026 Microsoft announced Foundation Mode, in preview, which replaces Development Mode for games that ship on Xbox. A Foundation Mode title pays nothing for its included services, with no monthly usage caps, only API rate limits, and it can use them on every platform the game ships on, including PlayStation, Switch, Steam, and mobile.
It has conditions:
- The game must ship, or plan to ship, on Xbox, and the title must be linked to a Partner Center product.
- During the preview, it is for new titles only, and you have to request access.
- It leaves out dedicated multiplayer servers, user-generated content, classic CloudScript, segmentation, experiments, churn prediction, the CDN, custom telemetry events, and cross-region and S3 Data Connections. Calls to those APIs return a permissions error.
- Azure Functions compute is still billed through your Azure subscription.
If your game is not coming to Xbox, Development Mode and the paid plans are your options.
How PlayFab's meters work
On a paid plan, each service has its own meter: events, profile reads and writes, statistics, leaderboards, content, CloudScript, economy, Party, matchmaking, and more. Standard and Premium include an amount of each meter, and usage past it is billed at that plan's rate.
The meters that matter most for analytics are events:
| Meter | Pay-as-you-go | Standard | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStream events | $6.60 per million | 20M included, then $6.00 per million | 500M included, then $5.70 per million |
| Telemetry events | $2.75 per million | 10M included, then $2.50 per million | 500M included, then $2.38 per million |
Two details affect the bill:
- Events are metered in 1 KB blocks. An event with a 2.5 KB body counts as 3 events, so keep payloads small.
- PlayStream events cost more than twice as much as telemetry. PlayStream events are checked against your rules and update player segments in real time. Telemetry events skip that step and go straight to analytics storage. Microsoft's own advice is to send events you only need for analysis as telemetry. Some PlayStream events are also generated automatically by other PlayFab calls, such as sign-ins and statistic updates.
A worked example: a game with 20,000 daily players who each send 40 events a day, all under 1 KB, sends about 24 million events a month.
- As telemetry: about $66 a month on Pay-as-you-go, or $35 of overage on top of the $99 Standard plan.
- As PlayStream events: about $158 a month on Pay-as-you-go, or $24 of overage on Standard.
That is only the event meter. Profile writes, statistics, leaderboards, and CloudScript are billed separately.
Multiplayer servers
Dedicated servers are billed separately, by virtual machine hours, storage, and network egress. Once you pick a plan there is a small free quota for evaluation, and after that you pay per VM hour. Microsoft has announced that VM prices go up by about 6% on average on November 1, 2026.
PlayFab analytics
PlayFab's analytics are built on the events your game and PlayFab's services send:
- Reports: daily, monthly, and rolling 30-day overviews of logins, revenue, and API usage, a 30-day retention report, new user retention and conversion, the top 100 spenders and items, and an A/B test KPI report. Each report can be downloaded as CSV.
- Data Explorer: queries over your event data, in a basic mode that needs no query language and an advanced mode that uses KQL (Kusto Query Language). Every title has 30 days of event history.
- Data Connections: to keep events longer, PlayFab sends them to Azure Data Explorer, Azure Blob Storage, Microsoft Fabric, or AWS S3 (in preview), usually within 5 minutes. You pay for that storage separately, and you build your own reports on top of it.
Microsoft retired Insights Management, which used to control event retention and query performance inside PlayFab, on March 31, 2026, and recommends Data Connections instead.
The reports cover logins, retention, and revenue. Anything specific to your game, such as win rate by character or which items players pick before they win, comes from your own events, and you write the queries yourself in Data Explorer or in your own warehouse.
Limits to know before you choose PlayFab
- The free mode is small. Development Mode stops at 1,000 lifetime players per title. Foundation Mode removes the caps, but only for games that ship on Xbox.
- Costs are hard to predict. Every service has its own meter. Estimate events, profile writes, and statistics from a playtest before you launch, and watch the Billing Summary.
- Event history is 30 days. Keeping events longer means setting up a Data Connection and paying for the storage.
- Game-specific reports are up to you. The built-in reports cover logins, retention, and revenue, not gameplay or balance.
- There is no Godot SDK. Godot games call the REST API, and the same goes for engines without an SDK.
When PlayFab is a good fit
PlayFab is a reasonable choice when:
- You need a backend anyway: accounts, cross-platform saves, an economy, matchmaking, or dedicated servers.
- You ship on console, especially Xbox, where Foundation Mode makes the core services free.
- Your team is comfortable with Azure, and with KQL or your own warehouse for deeper analysis.
PlayFab alternatives
PlayFab does two jobs, so the alternatives depend on which one you need.
For a game backend:
- Unity Gaming Services covers accounts, Cloud Save, Economy, leaderboards, and matchmaking, with analytics that are free up to 50,000 MAU. Read Unity Analytics pricing and alternatives for the analytics limits.
- Heroic Labs Nakama is an open source game server you can host yourself or run on Heroic Cloud, and its sister product Satori adds LiveOps and analytics.
- Epic Online Services offers free cross-platform accounts, friends, achievements, and lobbies for any engine and store.
For analytics:
- GameAnalytics is free with no MAU limit and has reports for progression, resources, and monetization. GameAnalytics pricing and alternatives covers its plans and data limits.
- Google Analytics for Firebase is free and strong for mobile games, with BigQuery export. Firebase Analytics for games covers its event limits, data retention, and BigQuery export cap.
- Game Stats AI is built for competitive and match-based games. A match is one record with its own attributes, such as character, map, mode, and result, and the reports cover win rate by character, win rate by map, deck archetypes, retention, and progression, split by game version. Your game or server sends events to a REST API, so it works with any engine and platform, consoles included. Every plan, including the free plan with 1,000 tracked records a month, includes the MCP server for Claude, ChatGPT, and other AI tools. It can run alongside PlayFab: keep PlayFab for accounts and economy, and send match results to Game Stats AI from your game server or CloudScript.

Frequently asked questions
Is PlayFab free?
For development, yes. Development Mode is free for up to 1,000 lifetime players per title, with caps on events and other usage. Games that ship on Xbox can use Foundation Mode, which makes the core services free without monthly caps. Otherwise a launched title needs a paid plan: Pay-as-you-go at $0 a month plus usage, Standard at $99, or Premium at $1,999.
What happens when a PlayFab title reaches 1,000 players?
A title in Development Mode stops accepting new players at 1,000 lifetime players. To keep growing, launch the title in Game Manager, which removes the Development Mode limits and starts billing on your plan.
How much do PlayFab events cost?
On Pay-as-you-go, PlayStream events cost $6.60 per million and telemetry events $2.75 per million. Standard includes 20 million PlayStream and 10 million telemetry events a month, and Premium includes 500 million of each. Each event is metered in 1 KB blocks.
What is the difference between PlayStream and telemetry events?
PlayStream events are processed in real time, so they can trigger rules and update player segments. Telemetry events skip that processing and go straight to analytics storage, and they cost less than half as much. Use telemetry for events you only need for analysis.
How long does PlayFab keep analytics data?
Every title has 30 days of event history in Data Explorer. To keep events longer, set up a Data Connection that sends them to Azure Data Explorer, Azure Blob Storage, Microsoft Fabric, or AWS S3, and pay for that storage separately.
What is PlayFab Foundation Mode?
Foundation Mode is a free PlayFab tier, in preview since March 2026, for games that ship on Xbox. It includes identity, progression, leaderboards, economy, matchmaking, lobbies, and built-in reports on every platform the game ships on, without monthly caps. It leaves out dedicated servers, custom telemetry events, segmentation, experiments, and classic CloudScript.
